MR2 takes Miss Daisy parts (Water to air Intercooler Install)

In this episode Marty is recycling parts from our EJ powered VW Beetle project to get Water to Air Intercooling on his MR2. Then it's time to install an ECU to try and make it all work. More problems are discovered as the car is slowly transformed from a rusted nugget into a reborn JDM weapon (using copper pipes and bends from the hardware shop) ready to defeat Moog's Moon Buggy.

Been away for a good minute and now I'm playing catchup. I totally feel the struggle of your car fighting you. My current project is a 1995 Trans Am that's been upgraded to a WS6 package with parts from the Wrecker and a C4 corvette engine and transmission. Add the new aftermarket oil cooler and 4 core radiator along with it having 2 different wiring harnesses and a replaced ECM from a California Highway interceptor and I'm having a ball of a time trying to even do repairs at this point. Keeping track of what parts are what and from where is a nightmare. Especially since I wasnt the one that did the swap.

I was really admiring your ingenuity with the inter-cooler plumbing. I did have a thought though. If you used aluminum rather than copper, you would be utilizing the faster dissipating heat-sink properties of the aluminum rather than the slow dissipation of the copper, effectively making your pipes under car intercoolers surrounded by a lot of "not in the engine bay" heat.

You can run the copper pipes inside garden hose to make a coating for it, protects it from debris and if a holder brakes it keeps the copper from rubbing and digging holes into itself, ran my old truck's transmission cooler lines this way, never had issues.

I wouldn’t want to use copper long term because mixing copper and aluminum will cause galvanic corrosion. That being said for the challenge with Moog I’d give it a pass.

will introduce an effect called "galvanic corrosion", which will eat away at the aluminium quite rapidly. That's why copper isn't typically used in automotive applications.

I feel sorry for you... I have a 95 neon that I've had running without the throttle body, so no throttle position sensor or idle air control valve, and no intake pressure sensor. It fires right up with just the cam and crank sensors, the coil, and the injectors hooked up. It doesn't IDLE well without the throttle body or associated sensors, but it does run like that. There is something to be said for the simplicity of early 90's electronic engine control.

Canadian fan here. Loved your content for years. Lots of people in the comments telling you that your car isn't that rusty and making jokes, but I haven't seen anyone actually offer tips for working with rusty cars. If you can (foresight is hard), soak any bolts that look tough the night before with penetrating oil and you won't believe the difference it makes. Cheers

Hi Is there a previous vid or can it be in the next episode of the MR2, that a list with part numbers for all the crimping tools that David uses can be supplied so I can build up my tool kit?
Michael Gigli
Michael Gigli 7 months ago
@Emily An Im ok at wiring, and think that with this type of work, the correct crimping tools are super important to get a quality outcome. Watching car shows regularly, I have seen mechanics say over and over again that wiring "is complicated", "is important for safety", "is important asthetically" but very rarely show proper tool lists when doing harness and wiring work. Also if people use Scotch Locks I'm not taking any advice from them......
